The world’s number one female golfer, Lydia Ko announced Gary Gilchrist as her new full-time coach after parting ways with David Leadbetter in December last year. This new mentoring team plans to take 2017 by storm with not only a new coach, but new caddie Gary Matthews (also from South Africa).
Gary Gilchrist is well known amongst the LPGA superstars and has worked with Ariva Jutanugam, Shanshan Feng and Yani Tseng. Although it is still early and the team is in the process of building trust in their professional relationship, Lydia are positive about the future and very happy with her decisions.
Ko told reporters “it was a coincidence that it all happened at the same time.”
“I obviously wasn’t planning to say ‘hey I want to change everything up’,” Ko said. “I felt like I needed some change.
“Even though I might be the No.1 ranked player in the world, I still feel like there are a lot of aspects of my game that I can improve on. And I think no matter what ranking you are, you have got to have that mindset because there is always a position for you to get better.”
We look forward to see what Ko achieves this year and with a South African on her side, how can she not improve!
